Research:

This is the family of Francis Cougan, a native of Ireland.

Francis' son, Peter Cougan, emigrated to the UK and resided in
Lanarkshire, Scotland.  The family has connections to the Wishaw
area.

Two generations later, Francis' great-grandson, Peter Cougan 
[III], emigrated to the US with some of his children.  The family 
originally lived in Bayonne (Essex County), New Jersey, and then 
spread across the country.

The spelling of the family name appears to have been COUGAN from
the time they arrived until the present.
