1. Hugh1 Coogan, son of Patrick [Francis] Coogan and Bridget [Mary] McConville, was born IRELAND about 1819. Hugh died 07 FEB 1889 in Hurley, Ulster, NY, at 69 years of age.

He married Mary Caffrey IRELAND, c.1847. Mary was born IRELAND 1828.

He resided in Upper Creggan, Armagh, IRELAND 1848. The baptism of his daughter, Bridget, took place in the parish.

He emigrated, 1853. Point of origin: IRELAND. *

Hugh immigrated, 29 JUL 1853. Destination: New York, New York, NY. He appears in immigration records. He arrived at Castle Garden with his wife, Mary, and daughters, Bridget (age 3) and Margaret (infant), aboard "Orient." Three other passengers may be related: Owen Coogan (age 16), Bridget (age 15) and Ann (age 13).

Hugh's occupation: Laborer in Hurley, Ulster, NY, 1855-1860. He appears in the 1855 New York State Census (as Kugen). He appears in the 1860 US Census.

He resided in Rondout, Ulster, NY 1855, [87 Wood Street ?]. He appears in the 1855 New York State Census (as Kugen). The census reported that he and his family had lived in town for two years.

He resided in Hurley, Ulster, NY 1860-1870. He appears in the 1860 and 1870 US Censuses. He appears in the 1865 New York State Census.

"Hugh L. Coogan" appears in the Griffith's Valuation in the townland of Lissaraw, Creggan Parish, County Armagh. We are not sure of the relationship to Hugh "Elder" but it could be an important clue on the family origins.

He resided in Hurley, Ulster, NY 1875-1889. He appears in the 1880 US Census. He appears in the 1875 New York State Census. His death certificate stated his residence.
