His home was at Calamine, about six miles northwest of here. He lived for more than 80 years in Kendall township. Survivors are a son, John, and daughter, Mrs. John Smith, Kendall, and three sisters, Mrs. Lawrence Fleming and Miss Margaret, Calamine, and Mrs. West Ray, Browntown. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 9 a.m. in St. Michael's church at Calamine, with the Rev. Lawrence Bindle officiating. Burial will be at Mineral Point. 18 AUG 1936 - [PAGE 5] MRS. RAY DIES - BROWNTOWN - Funeral services for Mrs. John W. Ray, 81, who died Saturday night at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Eugene R. Doyle, were conducted this morning in St. Victor's Catholic church, the Rev. E. C. McCullow officiating. Death was caused by a heart ailment. Burial was in St. Paul's cemetery, Mineral Point. Born in Mineral Point, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Coogan, she was married in 1881. They lived in Mineral Point and Calamine. For the past seven years they had lived in Browntown. Surviving are the widower; three sons, John and Coogan, both of Darlington, and Thomas Coogan, Detroit, Detroit; two daughters, Mrs. Doyle and Mrs. F. B. J. Fleming, 79, who died late Tuesday [23 FEB 1943] at her home in Calamine, were to be held at St. Michael's Catholic church in Calamine this morning. The Rev. Paul Singleton was to conduct the services, with burial in Kendall. The former Bridget Coogan was born in Willow Springs township. Coogan, 83, a former Watertown area resident, died at the home of a daughter in Milwaukee Friday (Feb. 21, 1964) after a brief illness. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday in St. Bernard's Catholic Church, Watertown. The former Ella Burke, a Dodge county native, had lived in the Watertown area until the late 1940s. She was a member of St. Bernard's Church and its Rosary and Altar Societies. JOHN COOGAN - MINERAL POINT - Mrs. John Coogan, 69, a lifelong area resident, died in a Dodgeville Hospital Saturday (Jan. 22, 1966) after a brief illness. The former Nellie Carey was born in the town of Kendall. She was married to John Coogan in 1921, and the couple had farmed in the Willow Springs area since then. Coogan, age 84, died Monday, December 4, 1978 in a Dodgevllle nursing home after an extended illness. He was born in Willow Springs Township and married the former Nellie Carey in 1921. Together they farmed in the Willow Springs area until retirement In 1968. Mr. Coogan was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church, the Knights of Colombus, and he was a member of The Catholic Knights for 63 years. Survivors Include one daughter, Mrs. Harrv (Helen) Reganti of Rockford, Illinois; four sons, John J. of Mineral Point, James of Rockford, Illinois, Lawrence of Sturgls, Michigan, and Louis of Kenosha, Wisconsin. The parish rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. and K of C's and Catholic Knights rosary at 8:30p.m. 22 SEP 1999 CONSTRUCTION WORKER DIES AFTER ACCIDENT - A 21 year-old Ridgeway roofer died Monday one week after being shocked by an electrical wire in Cross Plains. Corry Coogan, a 1996 graduate of Dodgeville High School who loved hunting and sports, died at University Hospital in Madison. Coogan was critically injured Sept. 14 while roofing a home in the 2100 block of Caesar Street in Cross Plains. Coogan and another roofer, Jamie Culvert, 19, of Dodgeville, were using a ladder that accidentally touched an electrical wire, Cross Plains police said. Culvert was released from University Hospital last week. Bob Coogan, Corry's father, said the ladder was being lowered and may have been pushed into the power line by a gust of wind. Corry Coogan qualified for the state wrestling tournament his sophomore year in high school and also participated in football and baseball, his father said. Coogan loved to bow and rifle hunt on land around Ridgeway. He shot an 11-point buck about three years ago. "He always had a smile," his father said. "Everybody got along with him, whether they were 4 years old, 14 or 40." Services for Coogan are set for 11 a.m. on Friday at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Mineral Point. COOGAN... 20 OCT 1999 - [PAGE 10A] COOGAN, ZOLA H. - MIDDLETON / NORWELL, MASSACHUSETTS - Zola H. Coogan, age 87, passed away on Monday, October 4, 1999 in Norwell, Massachusetts. She was born on March 7, 1912 in Superior, the daughter of William and Margaret (Carroll) Hill. She attended St. Mary's College, Notre Dame, Indiana, and on June 27, 1935 in Solon Springs, Wisconsin married Matthew J. Coogan. After their marriage, the Coogan's resided in Superior, Portage, Watertown, Milwaukee, Solon Springs, Bristol, and Wauwatosa until 1951 when they moved to Madison. Mr. Coogan died on November 21, 1987 and Zola moved to Middleton in 1994. She is survived by three children, Timothy P. (Bernice B.) Coogan of Bellevue, Washington, Zola A. Coogan of Washington, Maine, Mary M. (Michael Moyer) Coogan of Hanover, Massachusetts; four grandchildren, Garth M. Coogan of Helsinki, Finland, Leslie E. Coogan of Los Angeles, California, Sean C. Coogan of Kirkland, Washington, and Samantha Coogan Moyer of Hanover, Massachusetts. She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Matthew J. Coogan; an infant son Kevin; both parents; four sisters, Virginia, Maxine, Eugenia, and Georgie; and two brothers, William and James. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, gardening, travel, and thoroughly admired her grandchildren. Zola was an excellent cook and at the age of 80, to the dismay of her children and their spouses, closed her kitchen. Despite this minor setback, her loving and opportunistic children were able to unabashedly capitalize on her gardening, weedpulling, painting, and furniture refinishing skills during her frequent visits to them. The family wishes to thank Zola's wonderful friend and neighbor, Helen Geier and her daughter Holley, for their help during tier brief illness. Her wisdom, wit and grace will be sadly missed by her family and friends. A Memorial Mass will be held at 12:00 noon on Friday, October 22, 1999 at ST. "Bud" Coogan, age 80, of Mineral Point, died Friday, Jan. 21, 2005, at the Mineral Point Care Center surrounded by his family. He was born March 19, 1924, at the family farm in Willow Springs township, Lafayette County, to Nellie V. Carey Coogan and John F. Coogan. He attended Seven Oaks rural school and graduated from Mineral Point High School with the class of 1942. After graduating he worked for Rockford as a drill press operator at Greenleys. He enlisted in the Army and served for two years in Germany. He was united in marriage to Grace VanMatre, daughter of Lloyd and Lucile Brown VanMatre, in Truman, on April 10, 1947. They farmed for three years in the Willow Springs area, then moved to the Hollandale area, where they farmed until 1967. In the fall of 1966, they purchased the Log Cabin Inn from James and Frances Argall. They operated the Coogan's Hi Lite Bar and Grill for 18 years until retiring in Mineral Point in 1984. In 1969, he purchased the Coogan family farm. His son, Bob, has now taken over the farm and is the fifth generation of Coogan's to own it. Bud was a member of the St. Mary's-St. Paul's Church. He was a proud veteran and member of the American Legion Post No. 510 in Hollandale, where he was a commander for a number of years, then transferred to Mineral Point American Legion Post No. 170, where he was a lifetime member. He had been a Legion member for 52 years. He was also a life member of the V.F.W. Bud and Grace were involved in many community projects in both Hollandale and Mineral Point until Bud became disabled in 1988. He is survived by his wife, Grace; three children born to this union, James (deceased), Mary (Dennis) Walrack, their children, Tim (Sharon), and grandchildren, Stephanie and Megan Walrack, and Jason (Tina) and grandchildren, Deven, Sasha, and Jaron Walrack; and Bud and Grace's second son, Robert (Patty U'ren) and their children, Tammy (Curtis Zimmerman), Jamie and Correy (deceased) Coogan; his sister, Helen (Harry) Reganti; his brothers, Louie (Fran) Coogan and Laurence (Marge) Coogan; loving nephews and their families; his Legion buddies; and many special friends and cousins throughout his life. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, Jan 25, 2005, at 10 a.m. at ST. MARY'S-ST PAUL'S CATHOLIC CHURCH, Mineral Point. Burial will be held at St. Paul's Cemetery. Military graveside rites will be accorded by the Mineral Point V.F.W. and American Legion Post No. 170. Coogan, age 92, passed away on Oct. 11, 2010, at Bloomfield Manor in Dodgeville with her family by her bedside after a brief illness. Grace was born in Mineral Point on July 25, 1918. She was the only child of Lloyd and Lucile (Brown) VanMatre. She attended Mineral Point Schools. She graduated in 1936. She attended Platteville State Teachers College. She graduated in 1939. She taught in Lafayette County Rural schools for eight years. On April 10, 1947, she married John (Bud) Coogan in Truman. They farmed in Willow Springs Township; later moving to the Hollandale area where they farmed and raised their three children, Jim, Mary and Bob. Grace was active in many school and community activities. She was a Blue Ribbon 4-H Club leader and project teacher for many years. Her door was always open to anyone who needed a meal or place to stay. She had a special bond with her nephews who spent many days with Grace and her family over the years. In November of 1966, Grace and Bud purchased a restaurant and bar in Mineral Point, which they operated as Coogan's Hi-Lite. In February of 1967, a farm sale was held and the family moved to Mineral Point where they retired in 1984. Grace was active in many community affairs and instigated many functions in the business. Grace's hot beef with potatoes and gravy has not been forgotten. Grace called all her loyal helpers, customers, friends and employees her "Coogan Hi-Light Family." Grace enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, crafts and genealogy. She shared the crafts and genealogy with her good friend, Sherie Ray. Her genealogy included the Will Brown Family, as well as, the VanMatre's and the Coogan's. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary #170 for 25 years where she served as treasurer for many years. She was also a member of the VFW Auxiliary #7629, Grace and Bud were chosen Citizens of the Year in 1989. They were made honorary members of the Mineral Point Jaycees in appreciation of their continued support of the Mineral Point area and Jaycees. She is survived by her daughter, Mary (Dennis) Walrack; and her son, Robert (Patty); Mary's step- children, Tim (Sharon) Walrack and step-grandchildren, Stephanie and Megan; Jason (Tina) Walrack and step-grandchildren, Deven, Sasha and Jaron; Robert's children, Tammy (Denny Sporle) and Jamie (Elizabeth) and great- granddaughter, Isabelle, all of Mineral Point; sister-in-law, Helen Reganti of Rockford, Ill.; brother-in-law, Loui of Kenosha; special nephews, Mickey (Therese) of Janesville, Dennis (Linda) of Madison, Steve (Mary Jo) of Cottage Grove, Dave (Joan) of Mineral Point, Tim (Penny) of Mineral Point, Larry (Barb) of Rockford, Ill., Stuart (Anne) of Madison and Ron (Elaine) of Lyndon Station. Also, many great-nieces and nephews. She is further survived by many cousins on the Brown and VanMatre side, including many special friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John, in 2005; her son, Jim, in 1965; her grandson, Corry, in 1999, her brother-in- law, Harry; her brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Raymond (Nancy), James (Velma) and Lawrence (Marilyn); special friends, Joe Kammerude and Francis Robinson; and nephews, Martin, Gerald, Jackie, Eugene and Patrick. Funeral services will be held on Friday, Oct. 15, 2010, at 11 a.m. at the GORGEN FUNERAL HOME in Mineral Point. Father James Hinnen will officiate. Burial will be in St. Paul's Cemetery.
