COOGAN, ILL A WEEK, IS DEAD - Former Alderman Passes Away After an Operation - At Hospital But Five Days - Illnes Had Not Been Thought Serious - Sudden Change Yesterday - Employee of New York Central Twelve Years - William Coogan of No. 122 Manila street, former alderman of the Fifth ward and brother of James P. Coogan, night station manager at the New York Central Station, died at St. Joseph's Hospital last night following an operation. Mr. Coogan had been a patient at the hospital since last Wednesday. Mr. Coogan's death came as a shock to his relatives as his illness had not been considered critical. He had been able to work last Sunday night at the New York Central Station, where he was employed as a switchman at the east end. His condition became worse yesterday, however, and he survived only a few hours. Mr. Coogan was born in this city thirty-eight years ago. After leaving school he entered the employ of the New York Central Railroad and for about ten years was employed in the clerk room. He decided to enter the grocery business and for ten years conducted a store at Hawley avenue and Oak street. Two years ago he returned to the employ of the New York Central. He was elected to the Common Council in 1902 and served through 1903. Mr. Coogan was well known in the section of the city in which he lived. He was an attendent at St. Vincent de Paul's Church and a member of the C.M.B.A. He never married. Surviving are three brothers, James P., John and Henry Coogan, and three sisters, Miss Margaret, Mrs. Richard Murphy and Mrs. John Bauder. Arrangements for the funeral have not been made. 17 JAN 1912 [COOGAN] - The funeral of William J. He retired in 1984 as Chief of Maintenance for the Syracuse Fire Department after 31 years of service. He was a veteran of the US Army during World War II and a recipient of the Bronze Star. Mr. Coogan also served for 32 years in the Army National Guard with the 50th Armor Division and retired as a Chief Warrant Officer. He is predeceased by his wife, Ann, who died in 1984. Norman was born to Charles and Ethel (Norman) Coogan on Mather Street in Syracuse, lived in Chittenango and spent from 1921 to 1925 in Elmcrest Children's Center. He lived in Toledo; Ohio; Detroit, Michigan; and was "adopted" to the Forgar Farm in Clay and served in the Army (Otto Bickley signed for him so he could join) in Panama Canal and drove the trolley in New York City before moving to Syracuse in 1946. He was married at St. Malachy's Church in Brooklyn in 1940 and was a communicant of Blessed Sacrament Church in Eastwood. He was a devoted father and husband and retired from Niagara Mohawk in 1977. He and his wife retired to North Carolina and Virginia before moving back to Syracuse to be with their family. He was predeceased by his wife of 64 years, Dorothy, in 2004; his granddaughter, Michele French, in 2008; and his brother, Albert Cogan [sic], in 1994. She graduated with honors from Hobart William Smith College in 1976 and received her master's degree from Cortland College. Michele was a dedicated teacher for the Auburn Public School District starting in 1976 and retired from Seward Elementary School. She was a proud volunteer and donor for the Women's Rights National Park in Seneca Falls. Michele was predeceased by her mother, Nancy Coogan. Barbara was born in Syracuse, NY on Sept. 11, 1942. She married her husband Ralph on Nov. 25, 1983. She was employed with General Motors in Syracuse, NY and retired in 1993 moving to Tecumseh, MI with her husband. Upon Ralph's retirement in 1998, they moved to Port Charlotte, FL and then to The Villages, FL in 2004. She had a knack for making friends wherever she went, was very talented in Arts and Crafts especially glass fusion, and an avid Mah Jongg player. She especially enjoyed playing golf with a Thursday women and Monday couples leagues. She was preceded in death by a sister Rosemary Haynes. She leaves behind her husband of 35 years, Ralph; sisters, Joanne DiPietro of North Syracuse, NY, Linda Emery of Cicero, NY, Kathleen Maser and a brother, Howard Haynes, both of Syracuse, NY; son, Dean Russell of Parish, NY whom she truly enjoyed spending time with, a son, Frank Russell Jr. of West Monroe, NY, and daughter, Kellylynn Hendrix of Wildwood, FL; stepsons, Randall Coogan of Cicero, NY, Terrance Coogan of Sarasota, FL; 13 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
