For some time, Mr. Cogan had been in feeble health and last Friday he consented to go to the hospital where he rapidly sank and this morning he passed away. Peter Cogan was the veteran printer of this city and in his day there were few men at the case who could equal him as a compositor but of late years his career was varied and checkered. [photo; caption: "PETER COGAN"] About six years ago he was sent by the International Typographical Union to the Childs- Drexel Home for Aged Printers at Colorado Springs, where it was thought he would spend the rest of his days free from care, but after a brief stay there he grew tired of the enforced rest and returned to this city where he has since lived spending the time with members of his family. Peter Cogan was born at Morristown, County Kildare, Ireland September 9th, 1833. His father at the time of Cogan’s birth was one of the agitators for the freedom of Ireland and belonged to the party known as “Young Ireland”. In order to escape deportation to Australia, he fled to America in 1845. In 1848 he returned to Ireland for his family, consisting of Peter and seven daughters. Cogan the elder settled in Watertown, and young Peter was apprenticed to the printers’ trade serving an apprenticeship of seven years in the office of The Union. When he became a journeyman he went to New York where he worked at the case on The Courier and The Enquirer, afterwards merged into The World. Being in poor health, Cogan embarked on a three years’ cruise on a whaling vessel, cruising during that time in the South Atlantic in search of sperm whale. During that time he visited many foreign countries. On returning to New York, he again returned to the case. After a time he went to Watertown, his parents then living at Brownville. While there he married Miss Elizabeth Fromont, who survives. He then came to Syracuse and worked on The Courier. - Left Case for Musket - On the outbreak of the Civil War Cogan enlisted in Company G of the Sixteenth New York regiment of volunteers. Fifteen men went with Cogan from the office of The Courier, among them being three Captains and a color sergeant. Henry C. Thompson was Cogan’s Captain. Cogan was sent to the fortifications at Yorktown and Gloucester Point. Soon after his arrival he was ordered by General Butler to Norfolk, his headquarters, to work as a printer on an official war newspaper named The Regime, which published the army and local news, also official notices. After leaving Norfolk Peter Cogan again rejoined his regiment and was present at Fort Fisher, the storming of Richmond and the surrender of Lee at Appomattox Court House. In September 1865, he received an honorable discharge and returned to his family in Watertown. Recently an application for a pension was made for Mr. Cogan, which within the last few days was granted, and had he lived until next month would have received his first payment. After a brief stay in Watertown Cogan came to this city, where he successfully worked on The Standard, Courier, Journal, Herald, and other papers of this city. He was always active in the typographical union which in his later years was not unmindful of the services rendered by this veteran printer. Cogan possessed a fund of information on matters pertaining to the craft, his memory being accurate and he was happiest when relating to a party of youngsters reminiscences of bygone days. In his younger days he was possessed of a stalwart frame, and took much interest in athletics and feats of strength. He was a vigorous walker and was a frequent participant in walking contests, and several times took part in 6 day walking matches. He is survived by a widow and six children, Mrs. Mary Betts, Charles, William, Sylvester Cogan of this city, John Cogan of Rochester, and Peter Cogan who is in the west. 08 DEC 1906 - ["Herald" - PAGE ?] HEAD STRUCK BRIDGE - Peter J. COOGAN DIES; JACKIE'S GRANDFATHER - Syracuse Pharmacist for 30 Years Succumbs to Long Illness - Proud of Film Star - Visited Hollywood to See Him Work and Jackie Came East - John H. Coogan, 78, of 210 Wayne Street, grandfather of Jackie Coogan, screen star, and for more than 30 years owner of a pharmacy in the Bastable Block, died at his home late yesterday afternoon, following an illness of four months. His death was due to a complication of ailments. Word of Mr. Coogan's death was sent to his grandson last night. The young screen star is a student at a Jesuit college in Santa Clara, Calif. He will be unable to come to Syracuse in time for the funeral, his mother, Mrs. John H. Coogan, informed her brother Arthur J. Coogan of Syracuse, last night in a long distance telephone call from California to Syracuse. The day before his death Mr. Coogan received a letter from his noted grandson. The young motion picture star said that he was planning to come East next summer to visit his grandfather, preparatory to entering an Eastern College. Jackie said also he hoped his grandfather would recover from the illness that proved fatal yesterday afternoon. A native of Syracuse, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Timothy Coogan, who settled in this city after they came from Ireland, Mr. Coogan left school at an early age and entered the employee of the New York Central Railroad. He worked as a brakeman and was for a short time a station employee. Mr. Coogan then became a pharmacists apprentice, and after completing studies opened a pharmacy in the Bastable Block. He sold out to Stolz Brothers more than 30 years later and became an inspector in the Department of Public Works, retiring from that post a year ago. Jackie Coogan is the son of John H. Coogan JR and the former Lillian Dolliver. Jackie's father is the oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. John H. Coogan SR. The young movie star and his grandfather were great pals, Jackie making three visits to his grandfather's home in Wayne Street, first in June 1921, again in August 1924, and the third in 1928. The boy's career in motion pictures from the time he was made famous by Charlie Chaplin in "The Kid" was followed closely by his grandfather. Mr. Coogan visited Jackie on the Coast and watched him work in front of the movie cameras in Hollywood. Besides his wife and John H. Coogan JR, Mr. Coogan is survived by two other sons, Arthur J. Coogan, Syracuse, and George C. Coogan, Los Angeles, Cal.; two daughters, Mrs. John J. Portley, Albany, and Mrs. George A. Langan, Syracuse; two brothers, James P.
