http://www.cooganresearchgroup.com/crg/index.htm 19 March 2016 COOGAN Death Notices extracted from the "Deaths Reported", "Deaths", "Died" and "Obituaries" pages of the "Pottsville Republican", "Pottsville Herald" and "Pottsville Republican & Herald" [PA] [date listed is publication date]: ***Note - not a complete listing*** 25 NOV 1887 - [PAGE 4, COLUMN 2] DIED AT SHENANDOAH - Richard Coogan, a highly respected young man of Shenandoah, aged 34 years, died this morning of typhoid fever, which is prevalent there. 05 SEP 1892 - [PAGE 4, COLUMN 2] HIS LEGS TAKEN OFF - James Coogan, of New Street, is Run Over by an Engine - James Coogan, of New Street, Norwegian township, was in town late Saturday night, and unfortunately for himself, fell asleep on the track of the railroad quite close to the Fishbach rolling mill. About 1 o'clock engine No. 7, the yard shifter of the P. & R. Co. run up and down to the mill and it was on one of these trips that Coogan was run over and had both legs cut off above the knees. The engineer of the shifter was Thomas Parker; fireman, Samuel Williams, and conductor Wm. Brown. Dr. J. H. Swaving was immediately called and the injured man was made as comfortable as possible, and taken to his home in New street, where he resided with his widowed mother. Rev. M. F. Rooney, of St. Patrick's church, was also sent for shortly after the accident and administered to him at his home. Drs. J. H. and J. C. Swaving, with Dr. John T. Carpenter, went out about 10 o'clock and made an examination of Coogan. They gave it as their opinion that an operation would have to be performed by cutting the legs off further up, but it was understood objections were raised. Coogan has been employed by the Fishbach mill as a second piler, and is reported as a very steady employee and a very peaceable man. His brother died about a year ago, while another lives in the West. Many regrets have been expressed by his friends for the sad accident that befell him. James Coogan died last night from the effects of his injuries about 10 o'clock. As we have said, it was the opinion of the surgeons that the unfortunate man could not survive. 07 SEP 1892 - "Deaths and Funerals" [PAGE 4, COLUMN 3] COOGAN - The funeral of James Coogan, who was killed on a railroad at Fishcbach on Saturday night [03 SEP 1892], took place this morning from his later residence at New street at 9 o'clock, proceeding to St. Patrick's church, where a Requiem High Mass was celebrated by Rev. M. F. Rooney. The funeral was largely attended. Interment in Catholic Cemetery No. 2. The pall bearers were Thomas Russell, John Screeney, John Brennan, Thomas Conners, John Reilly, Patrick Curran. R. A. Waldron, funeral director. 23 DEC 1893 - [PAGE 2, COLUMN 3] MINERSVILLE MENTION - Mrs. Patrick Coogan, of Coal Castle, was buried at St. Kyran's cemetery, Heckscherville. The deceased was one of the oldest residents of the Heckscherville Valley. She leaves a family of grown-up children to survive her. 26 JUN 1905 - [PAGE 1, COLUMN 3] SCALDED TO DEATH - Phila. June 26 - Simon Coogan, of this city, was scalded to death today in the cellar of the Willow Street Power House of the Baldwin Locomotive Works. The accident was caused by a bursting steam pipe. 19 DEC 1912 - ["Daily Republican" - PAGE 1, COLUMN 7] CARL B. COOGAN, SR. - Carl B. Coogan, a former resident of Shenandoah and Mahanoy City, died late Wednesday afternoon at his late home, in Phila., to which place the family moved about three years ago. Deceased at one time was employed as a clerk in the county commissioners' office and represented the Singer Sewing Machine Co. at Hazleton. Surviving, he leaves his wife and the following children: Vincent of Mahanoy City, Frank, Carl, Harry, Leo, Jos. and Miss Marion, at home. Two brothers, Richard and John, of Pottsville, and three sisters, also of this city, survive. Coogan, Sr. of 40 West Coal st., Shenandoah, proprietor of the tailor shop at the corner of Jardin and Coal sts., died Sunday [04 SEP 1949] in the Locust Mt. Hospital. Ill for more than a year, he was hospitalized for three weeks, having suffered a fracture of his left leg, in a fall at his home. Born in Shenandoah April 15, 1883, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. James J. Coogan, he attended the public schools, and was first employed by the Sam Block Clothing Store. He was a member of the Annunciation Church and the Holy Name Society. Surviving is one son, James H., Jr., on the publicity department staff at Penn State; one sister, Mrs. John Ahearn, Phila.; one brother, Richard L., Phila.; and one grand-daughter, Catherine Ann Fleck, Shenandoah. Several nieces and nephews also survive. COOGAN - Richard J. Coogan, McKnight St., Gordon, died at Ashland State Hospital, Monday [05 NOV 1956] afternoon. A native of Five Points, he was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Daniel [sic] Coogan. Mr. Coogan was employed as a brakeman by Reading Railroad. A veteran of World War I, he served with the U. S. Navy. He was a member of Bernard J. Dolan American Legion Post 434, Ashland and Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, Gordon. Surviving are his wife, the former Marion Jennings; one son, John, Pottsville; two daughters, Virginia, wife of Frank Treon, Pottsville and Clair, wife of John Stribula, Long Island, N.Y.; and two brothers, Joseph, Norristown, and John, New York City. Coogan was held Thursday from the Daniel J. Horan Funeral Home 619 Mahantongo St. The Mass in St. Patrick's Church was celebrated by the Rev. Charles V. Devlin, the Rev. John E. Mulgrew as deacon and the Rev William M. Fahey was sub-deacon. The Rt. Rev. Msgr. John E. Boyle V.F. was in the sanctuary. Father Devlin performed the absolution and preached the sermon. Father Mulgrew gave the final blessing at the grave in Calvary Cemetery. Coogan, 77, of Pottsville, died Friday [13 OCT 2000] morning at home. Born in Port Carbon, Oct. 31, 1922, he was a son of the late James and Elizabeth McMullen Coogan. He was raised in Port Carbon, was a graduate of the former St. Stephen's High School, Port Carbon, and attended Penn State University. He was employed as a detail draftsman by the former Aetna Steel Co., Pottsville, from 1956 until its closing and was last employed in the same capacity at General Electric Environmental Services, Lebanon, retiring in 1987. He was a member of St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church, Pottsville. He was preceded in death by three brothers, James, Francis and Thomas Coogan; two sisters, Rosalie Mehling and Elizabeth Kelly. Surviving are his wife, the former Kathryn Babilya, to whom he would have been married 50 years on Nov. 23; three sons, Bernard Coogan, Paoli, James Coogan, California, and Dennis Coogan, Pottsville; four daughters, Danita A. She was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Roman Catholic Church, Minersville. She was also a past president of St. Francis School Guild, and a member of the Seltzer Hose Company Auxiliary, the Knights of Columbus Auxiliary, the former Travelers Protective Association Auxiliary and the American Association of Retired Persons. She was preceded in death by her husband, Francis J. "Chub" Coogan, in 1995; a son, Joseph Coogan, in 1983; five brothers, Daniel, Albert, Michael, George and Winfield Dauchess; two sisters, Margaret Good and Isabel Kulbitsky. "Granny" Leary Coogan, 86, of Levittown, died Friday [01 DEC 2006] at Statesman Woods Assisted Living, Middletown Township. Born in Cass Township, she was an original Levittown homeowner and was a member of the Queen of the Universe parish. She was a career Navy wife and was employed with Whitman's Chocolates in Philadelphia for a time. Mrs. Coogan enjoyed baking and playing bingo, but she truly enjoyed her neighbors in Levittown and was always there for them when she was needed. She also loved to do nice things for the children in her neighborhood. She was the beloved wife of the late Thomas M. Coogan; the loving mother of Thomas J. Coogan and his wife, Mary, Morrisville, Patricia Ann Coogan of Flemington, N.J., Eileen Coogan and William Orr, Michigan, and Karen Bollard and her husband, Gilbert, Levittown. She was the only child of the late Dr. A.A. Fleck and Catherine Coogan Fleck. She was a 1956 graduate of Shenandoah Catholic High School and a 1960 graduate of Penn State University where she was assistant editor of The Daily Collegian, the university newspaper. She worked as a reporter for the U.S. Information Agency and a writer for the Department of Commerce in Washington, D.C. In 1967, she married David Douglas in Dublin, Ireland, and settled there to continue her work and raise her family. She is survived by her husband, David; children, Jane and Stephen; and granddaughter, Eva Rose, at Moor House, 19 Pill Road, Hook Haverfordwest SA 624LX, Wales, UK.
