(Curry) Coogan, 92, of Wood Street, Somerset, died Friday, Jan. 24, 1997. She was the widow of Daniel J. Coogan and daughter of the late George and Maryann (O'Hara) Curry. She died at Nichols House Nursing Home in Fairhaven. She was born in Fall River and resided in the East End of Fall River. She had been a resident of Somerset since 1932 and was a communicant of St. Thomas More Church. Survivors include a daughter, Patricia Shay of Somerset; a sister, Mary Abbott of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; two grand- daughters; four great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Arrangements are by the Rose E. Sullivan Funeral Home, 866 County St., (Rte. 138) Somerset. 14 NOV 1997 FALL RIVER -- Helen M. (Coogan) Mitchell, 73, of Fall River, died on Thursday, Nov. 13, 1997, at the Charlton Memorial Hospital. She was the wife of John J. Mitchell, and daughter of the late Raymond E. and Loretta (Pelletier) Coogan. Born in West Warwick, R.I., Mrs. Coogan lived the past 67 years in Fall River. She was a communicant of Holy Name Church for 40 years. She graduated from Durfee High School and attended Boston University. During WWII, she served in the WAVES division of the Navy. Mrs. Mitchell served on the Massachusetts Civil Service Commission for 12 years, and became its first female chairperson. Until her retirement in 1986, she worked at the Division of Employment Security in Fall River and New Bedford. She was an active American Legion member who once commanded the Marjorie Lovell McBride Post. A former Democratic City Committee Woman, Mrs. Mitchell was a member of the electoral college that elected President Kennedy. She was also the Southeastern Massachusetts campaign manager for former Governor Endicott Peabody. Survivors include her widower; a daughter, Kathleen Mitchell Souza of Somerset; three sons, John R. Mitchell of Somerset, William C. Mitchell of Fall River, and James L. Mitchell of Taunton; a sister, Clare Long of Westport; 4 grand- children; and several nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Edward R. Coogan, Joan Dusoe, and Pauline Rourke. A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Holy Name Church, Hanover St. Arrangements are by the Waring-Ashton, Coughlin, Sullivan and Driscoll Funeral Home, 178 Winter St. 20 NOV 1999 SOMERSET -- Barbara L. (Callahan) Coogan, 72, of Wall Street, Fall River, died Thursday, Nov. 18, 1999, at Southcoast Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was the widow of Edward R. Coogan. Born in Washington, D.C., a daughter of the late Harvey G. and Mary (Harrington) Callahan, she spent her youth in Washington and was a longtime resident of Fall River. She was a communicant of Holy Name Church, Fall River. Mrs. Coogan was a 1945 graduate of Notre Dame High School and attended colleges in Washington. She was a homemaker and foster grandparent for the Fall River school system. Survivors include seven daughters, Maureen Dore and Theresa Levesque, both of Fall River, Eileen Sullivan of Somerset, Jane Grenier of Tiverton, R.I., Martha Home and Joan Mabie of Swansea, and Julia Coogan of Providence; four sons, Paul E. Coogan of Somerset, Mark R. Coogan of East Bridgewater, Thomas M. Coogan of Tiverton and Michael J. Coogan of Assonet; two sisters, Mary C. Schwartz of Silver Springs, Md., and Patricia Douglas of Vero Beach, Fla.; 19 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
