Russell Ohlheiser, Jr. and beloved mother of Patrick, Kathleen and Anne passed away peacefully Saturday (December 11, 1999) at St. Francis Hospital, Hartford, after a lengthy illness. She was born on August 11, 1930 in Newport RI, daughter of the late Arthur and Frances Coogan and had lived in Windsor for the past 42 years. She was a graduate of the University of Rhode Island and Duke University and was a registered dietitian and had worked at the University of Michigan Hospital, the Boston Children's Hospital and had taught at the St. Francis Hospital School of Nursing. 18 OCT 2005 - [PAGE B8] COOGAN - Robert Edmund Coogan, of Clinton, ended his long struggle with cancer on (October 17, 2005) just six days shy of his 67th birthday. He died in the arms of his wife and children at home, and they are grateful that he now walks with the Lord. Robert was born and grew up in Queens, NY the son of Florence and Eddie Coogan. At the age of 16 he met his future wife, Kathleen F. Hussey, also of Queens, NY. They were high school sweethearts and best friends from that time forward. They recently celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary on September 10, of this year. Robert attended La Salle Academy in New York, and the College of The Holy Cross in Worcester, MA, where he earned a BS degree Magna Cum Laude in Business Administration while enrolled in the Navy ROTC program. He served with distinction in the Navy as a member of the Judge Advocate Generals office in Washington D.C. and was in the honor guard for President Kennedy as a Lieutenant Commander. He worked for the Southern New England Telephone Company. He retired in 1990 as a District Manager after 29 years of service. Upon retiring, he assisted Kathy at Coogan Frame and Gallery, never forgetting a customer's name. The Coogans sold the business in 1999. Robert's Roman Catholic faith was at the center of his life and he was an active member of the St. Mary's Church of the Visitation, Where he served as a Catechist, lay minister to the sick, and as an Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist. He also served as president of the Parish Council. Robert is survived by his wife Kathleen, his brother Jack Coogan of North Carolina, and his four children, Ken Coogan of Ossining, NY, Greg Coogan of Oviedo, FL, Beth Ann Coogan Keegan of West Hartford, and Robert P. Coogan of Middlefield. Their spouses are Sandy, Valerie, Thomas and Julie, respectively. He was the proud Pop Pop of ten grandchildren, Colin, Lila, and Trevor Coogan of Ossining, NY; Ariel and Ian Coogan of Oviedo, FL; Patrick, Kathleen, and Christopher Keegan of West Hartford, and Abigail and Colleen Coogan of Middlefield. Robert's life was extraordinary in the love and loyalty he elicited from his family and friends. He was a beacon of kindness, strength and good humor for all that knew him. Frank was born in County Kilkenny, Ireland on December 31, 1923, son of the late Mr. & Mrs. Patrick Coogan of Green Street, Kilkenny City. He was one of twelve children and he is survived by two of his siblings, Robert Canice "Ken" Coogan of Kilkenny, Ireland and Bernadette Hyde of Wiltshire, England and their spouses as well as a sister in-law Nuala Coogan of Galway, Ireland. Frank was pre- deceased by nine of his siblings (Jim, Josephine, Mae, Ann, William, Patrick Joseph, Michael, and two infant children, Queenie and Blossie). He attended St. John's Monastery in Kilkenny during his primary and secondary school years and he began work at a young age. Frank drove a bread van for Mulhall's Bakery in Kilkenny when he was a teenager and he later acted as chauffeur for both the late Dr. Phair, Bishop of Ossory Co Kilkenny and E.T. Keane, one of the founders of the Irish newspaper, The Kilkenny People. As an adult Frank was a regional manager for Lucan Dairies in Dublin, Ireland, travelling around the country setting up depots in all of the southern counties. He retired from his position at Lucan Dairies became a U.S. Citizen and moved to the United States in 1957, first settling in Pennsylvania and later in New Jersey. Frank married his wife of 44 years, Bridget Regina Coogan, on August 10, 1968 in Astoria (Queens), New York. They settled in Vernon, CT and had two daughters who were the pride of his life, Deirdre Mary and Brenda Anne. Frank was predeceased in 1985 by his then 15 year-old daughter Deirdre Mary and this loss was one of the greatest burdens in his life. He is survived by his daughter, Dr. Brenda Anne Coogan O'Leary and her husband Mr. Scott Allen O'Leary of Burlington, CT; as well as his two beloved granddaughters, Aine Deirdre O'Leary and Clara Fallon O'Leary. His grandchildren dearly loved their "Pop" and his weekends often included playing with the girls after Mass on Sunday. In addition to his immediate family, Frank is survived by many loving nieces and nephews as well as many precious friends who were like family to him. Frank was also a long-time member of the Irish American Home in Glastonbury, CT where he enjoyed his passion was Irish Hurling and the Kilkenny Cats. He retired from International Fuel Cells (United Technologies) in 1991 and he thoroughly enjoyed his years of retirement. He was a member of Court House Plus in Vernon, CT spending many of his days swimming, exercising and chatting with friends. Frank was a member of the American Legion (Post 14) in Vernon. Frank was a communicant of St. Bernard's Church in Rockville, CT for 44 years, and he acted as Head Usher at the 11:30 Sunday Mass for 30 years. Frank was a devout Catholic who loved his faith and his parish, often making it to Mass despite illness or adversity. All who knew Frank will remember him as a jovial man who appreciated all of his Blessings and lived his life to the fullest. His concern for others was foremost in his mind and his loyalty as a friend, spouse, father and brother was evident.
