Coogan _____________________________________________________________________ (extracted from "Wisconsin State Journal" [WI], 20 OCT 1999, PAGE 10A): COOGAN, ZOLA H. - MIDDLETON / NORWELL, MASSACHUSETTS - Zola H. Coogan, age 87, passed away on Monday, October 4, 1999 in Norwell, Massachusetts. She was born on March 7, 1912 in Superior, the daughter of William and Margaret (Carroll) Hill. She attended St. Mary's College, Notre Dame, Indiana, and on June 27, 1935 in Solon Springs, Wisconsin married Matthew J. Coogan. After their marriage, the Coogan's resided in Superior, Portage, Watertown, Milwaukee, Solon Springs, Bristol, and Wauwatosa until 1951 when they moved to Madison. Mr. Coogan died on November 21, 1987 and Zola moved to Middleton in 1994. She is survived by three children, Timothy P. (Bernice B.) Coogan of Bellevue, Washington, Zola A. Coogan of Washington, Maine, Mary M. (Michael Moyer) Coogan of Hanover, Massachusetts; four grandchildren, Garth M. Coogan of Helsinki, Finland, Leslie E. Coogan of Los Angeles, California, Sean C. Coogan of Kirkland, Washington, and Samantha Coogan Moyer of Hanover, Massachusetts. She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Matthew J. Coogan; an infant son Kevin; both parents; four sisters, Virginia, Maxine, Eugenia, and Georgie; and two brothers, William and James. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, gardening, travel, and thoroughly admired her grandchildren. Zola was an excellent cook and at the age of 80, to the dismay of her children and their spouses, closed her kitchen. Despite this minor setback, her loving and opportunistic children were able to unabashedly capitalize on her gardening, weedpulling, painting, and furniture refinishing skills during her frequent visits to them. The family wishes to thank Zola's wonderful friend and neighbor, Helen Geier and her daughter Holley, for their help during tier brief illness. Her wisdom, wit and grace will be sadly missed by her family and friends. A Memorial Mass will be held at 12:00 noon on Friday, October 22, 1999 at ST. BERNARDS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 7450 University Avenue, with Fr. Joseph P. Higgins presiding. Burial will be in Watertown, Wisconsin. Friends may greet the family on Friday, October 22, 1999 from 10:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. at the GUNDERSON FUNERAL HOME, 7435 University Ave., Middleton, Wisconsin. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Middleton Public Library. _____________________________________________________________________
