W. COOGAN, OF HOBART The death occurred yesterday at his residence, Lord-street, Sandy Bay, Hobart, of Mr. William Coogan, principal of the firm of W. Coogan and Co. Pty. Ltd., furniture warehouse men, of Hobart, Launceston, and Burnie, and a former Mayor of Launceston. Mr. Coogan, who was a native of Collingwood (Vic.), was in his 84th year. He came to Tasmania over 60 years ago, and after residing for [photo; caption: "Late Mr. W. Coogan"] a period in Hobart came to Launceston, established a furniture business in Charles-street, and subsequently removed to Brisbane- street. His first factory site was in Brisbane-street, opposite the old firebell tower. The business expanded, and it was found necessary to secure larger premises As a result, the present factory at inveresk was established about 31 years ago. At one period his furniture factory was the largest in the Commonwealth. Mr. Coogan was a prominent bowler in Launceston some years ago, and was the first president of the Invermay club. For the past 20 years he has resided in Hobart. Mr. Coogan took an active interest in the civic affairs of Launceston for many years, and was Mayor in 1917 and 1918. His family consists of three sons, Messrs. A. F. and C. F. and R. F. Coogan, of Hobart, and one daughter, Miss Daisy Coogan, of Launceston. The Hobart branch of the firm, which has been established over 30 years, is managed by the deceased's nephew, Mr. James H. COOGAN Tasmanian Furniture Manufacturer Mr. William Coogan, managing director of the furniture manufacturing and warehousing firm of W. Coogan and Co. Pty. Ltd., of Hobart, Launceston, and Burnie, died, in his 84th year, at his home in Lord St., Sandy Bay, on Tuesday. Born at Collingwood (V.), he came, as a [photo; caption: "Mr. W. Coogan"] young man, first to Hobart and soon afterwards settled at Launceston. There he conducted his furniture business in Charles St., and later In Brisbane St. The development of the enterprise led to the establishment some 35 years ago at Inveresk of the factory that bears his name, as does that in Elizabeth St., Hobart, put Into operation several years later. During his period of residence at Launceston he was twice Mayor of the city in the Great War years. He was an active member of the Invermay Bowling Club, and on moving to Hobart, where the last 20 years of his life were spent, he became a member of the Royal Hobart Club. He was at one time a member of the Hobart Chamber of Commerce, and as managing director retained control of his business until the time of his death. Some years after the death, in 1919. of his first wife, he married Mrs. K. Day, then manager of the showrooms opened in Collins St., Hobart, at the same lime as the Elizabeth St. factory was started. A member of the Roman Catholic Church, ho regularly attended St. Joseph's Church, and In more recent years the Church of the Holy Ghost, Sandy Bay. He is survived by his wife, and leaves by his first marriage three sons, Messrs. Arthur F. Coogan, Reg F. Coogan. and Cliff F. Coogan, and his daughter, Miss Daisy Coogan. Requiem Mass will be celebrated at the Church of the Holy Ghost early this morning. W. COOGAN The funeral of Mr. W. Coogan, principal of the firm of W. Coogan Pty. Ltd., who died at his home, Sandy Bay, on Tuesday, took place at the Cornelian Bay Cemetery yesterday. Requiem mass was celebrated at the Church of the Holy Ghost, Sandy Bay, by Father R. Hyland, who also conducted a short service at the church at 10 a.m. and officiated at the graveside. Chief mourners were Mrs. W. Coogan (widow), Miss Daisy Coogan (daughter), Messrs. A. F., R. F., and C. F. Coogan (sons), James and Arthur Coogan (brothers). The firm's premises at Launceston and Hobart were closed until 1 p.m. The large gathering included representatives of the Hobart and Launceston staffs and Mr. H. W.
