He was 47. Mr. Coogan died Wednesday at his home in Rancho Cucamonga, Glendale fire officials announced Saturday. He was found by his wife of two years when she returned home from her job as a dispatcher at the Fire Department, where they met. Attempts to resuscitate Mr. Coogan were unsuccessful, fire Battalion Chief Steve Howard said. Last year, the 24-year department veteran received the fire chief's commendation for "heroic actions and commitment to duty" during the Calabasas- Malibu fire. Mr. Coogan was driving a fire engine that became trapped in a firestorm while protecting homes in Corral Canyon on Oct. 22, 1996. Six firefighters were injured, including William Jensen, who received second- and third-degree burns over 70 percent of his body and was hospitalized for three months. "Sean has been one of my best friends on and off the job for the whole 24 years he was in the department," Jensen said. "If he hadn't stayed at his post and kept pumping the water to us, we wouldn't have been able to get out." Mr. Coogan is survived by his wife, Linda, and an 11-year-old daughter, Jenna. __________________________________________________________________ (extracted from "San Diego Union-Tribune" [CA], 06 APR 1998): SEAN COOGAN... 47... firefighter...
