Coogan ______________________________________________________________________ (extracted from "Tennessean" [TN], 26 AUG 2016): PHILIP SHIELDS COOGAN, M.D. [photo] (February 13, 1938 - November 14, 2014) PHILIP SHIELDS COOGAN, M.D., age 76. Franklin. Passed away peacefully after an extended illness on Friday, November 14, 2014. The son of Paul and Elizabeth Coogan, he was born and raised in Peoria, Illinois, the youngest of seven children. Philip attended Notre Dame University, received his medical degree from St. Louis University, and trained at Rush Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Hospital in Chicago, IL in Pathology. During the Vietnam era, Philip served in the United States Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine in San Antonio, TX as a research pathologist and Chief of Histopathology. He authored numerous research articles with emphasis on urogenital tumorgenesis. In 1962, he joined Rush Medical College, Chicago, Illinois, as a U.S. Public Health Service Trainee in Pathology and eventually became Associate Professor of Pathology and Director of Research. In 1974 Philip became Director of Anatomic Pathology at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Chicago, IL Philip came to Johnson City, TN as the first chairman of the Department of Pathology in 1978 and served in that capacity for 21 years. He was most proud that he was able to participate in the establishment of the James H. Quillen School of Medicine at East Tennessee State University. While there he created a residency program to train physicians in pathology. Today these pathologists practice throughout the country. He was a member of St. Phillip’s Catholic Church. He is survived by his wife, Joan Carol Coogan, M.D., two daughters, Mary Trousdale (Robert) of Rochester, MN, Clare Rule (Chris) of Glenview, IL; two sons Philip Coogan, M.D. (Alice) of Nashville, TN, Joseph Coogan (Maureen) of Westport, CT. He is also survived by his brother Paul Coogan (Joann) and sister, Catherine Ward (Robert). Philip had 15 grandchildren. Katie, Robert, Elli, and Will Trousdale of Rochester, MN; Michael, Tom, George, John, and Anne Coogan of Nashville, TN; Elizabeth, Teddy, and Katherine Coogan of Westport, CT; Madeline, Olivia, and Carolyn Rule of Glenview of Glenview, IL. Two great-grandchildren, Thomas Porterfield and Caroline Joan Porterfield. There will be a private family memorial in Johnson City, TN next summer. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to: The Dr. Philip S. Coogan Pathology Fund c/o ETSU Foundation, Box 70721, Johnson City, TN 37614-1710. The fund supports the educational mission of the pathology department at East Tennessee University, James H. Quillen College of Medicine which Philip created.
