At 80. Retired partner in the Boston law firm Ropes & Gray, and widely known authority in the field of bankruptcy and creditors' rights. Died June 20, at ' Massachusetts General Hospital. A longtime resident of Newton Center, Mr. Coogan moved to Pomfret after his retirement from Ropes & Gray in 1977. He had been with the firm since 1942, becoming a partner 8 years later. He taught at a number of institutions of higher learning, including Yale University Law School, Duke University, the University of Virginia, the University of Georgia, the University of Southern California, the University of Houston and Vermont Law School. He had also been a lecturer in the continuing legal education program of the American Law Institute of the American Bar Association. The author of many articles on creditors and secured transactions for law reviews, Mr. Coogan was a member of the permanent editorial board at the Uniform Commercial Code, and was the principal author of "Secured Transactions Under the Uniform Commercial Code." He also was a long- time member of the National Bankruptcy Conference, and was a delegate to the US State Dept. Conference on International Leasing in 1977. He had served on the board of overseers of Case Western Reserve University and as chairman of the visiting committee of the university's Law School. Mr. Coogan was born in Watertown, Wisconsin, on December 3, 1904, the son of William Coogan and Eleanor (McFarland) Coogan. He studied for three years at Marquette University and graduated from Case Western Reserve University with a law degree in 1939, from Boston University with a master of arts degree in 1941, and Harvard University with a master's law degree the following year. He was a member of the American, Massachusetts and Boston Bar Associations, and associate of the Bar of the City of New York, and a member of Harvard Clubs of Boston and New York. Mr. Coogan leaves his wife, the former Barbara Tracy; two sons, attorney Peter W. Coogan of Newton, and Matthew A. Coogan, of Boston; two daughters, Rosalind Anderson of Newton, and Eleanor Merrill, of Arlington, Texas; and 11 grandchildren. A memorial service will be conducted at Eliot Congregational Church, Newton Corner, at 2 PM Monday. ______________________________________________________________________ (extracted from "San Francisco Chronicle" [CA], 22 JUN 1985, PAGE 14): PETER FRANCIS COOGAN Peter Francis Coogan, 80, a San Francisco lawyer and an authority on bankruptcy and business law, died Thursday of pneumonia in Boston. Mr. Coogan, who was a native of Watertown, Wis., and a graduate of Harvard Law School, wrote many law review articles and was the author of a respected treatise on business law. He was a member of the Murphy, Weir & Butler law firm of San Francisco. Surviving are his wife, Barbara, of San Francisco, and four children.
