Obituary of Nancy Gust Lexo

NANCY GUST LEXO Teacher

Nancy Gust Lexo, 53, a preschool and elementary school teacher for 
20 years, died of leukemia May 7 at her Alexandria home.

Mrs. Lexo taught most recently at Fort Belvoir Elementary School,
until illness forced her to stop in March.  She previously taught
at Hybla Valley and Groveton elementary schools in Fairfax County.

Her husband said that despite four cancers in the past five years,
Mrs. Lexo always made it back to the classroom and asked for the
most challenging students to teach, especially autistic children
and those with other severe disadvantages.  She was honored for
her teaching by the Wolf Trap Institute for Early Learning Through
the Arts.

She was born in Mount Vernon, N.Y., and as a child of an Army 
Officer, she lived in Germany, Taiwan and throughout the United
States.  She graduated from Fort Hunt High School in Alexandria
and attended Mary Washington College before graduating from 
American University.  She also received a master's degree in 
education from George Mason University in the early 1990s.  Two
of her daughters have succeeded her as teachers.

Mrs. Lexo enjoyed writing poetry, some of which was published in
Poets Domain magazine.

Her marriage to Martin Schwimmer ended in divorce.

Survivors include her husband of 11 years, Jim Lexo of Alexandria;
three daughters from her first marriage, Rebekah Zitron of Herndon
and Rosalie Schwimmer and Margot Schwimmer, both of Alexandria; 
her parents, Colette and Walter Gust of Washington, N.C.; two 
sisters, Cynthia Ellert of Springfield and Mary Colette Donovan
of Centreville; and a brother, Bill Gust of Roanoke.
