MARTIN COOGAN By the death in the Longreach Hospital yesterday afternoon at 5 o'clock of Mr. Martin Coogan there passed on another of the old identities connected with the pastoral industry in Central Queensland. The late Mr. Coogan was aged 87 years and till he entered the hospital on October [15th ?] last, had been employed on Glenbuck for about [24 ?] years, coming there first of all when the late Mr. Harry Coldham owned that property. Long before that he was on Tara in [1896] where he was shearing, and in those days he was a good man with the blades. Even then he was known to his intimates as "Old Martin." When he relinquished shearing, he was cowboy on Tara, and then moved to Dunraven, where he served under the late Mr. Alf. Coldham, but went back to Tara later. From there his next move was to Irvingdale, as Glenbuck was known in those days, and has been there ever since. He was a particularly good natured man, and would never see a traveller stuck for a pound or some assistance to lighten his burden along the roads. As a young man he was interested in several racehorses, and one particularly he remembered was "Shamrock" which he raced with the late Mat. Meehan in [Barcaldine ?]. Up till the time of his death he retained a liking for racing matters and always had an interest in the principal southern events. The late Mr. Coogan was born in Kilkenny, Ireland, and came to Australia in a sailing vessel about [60 ?] years ago. He never married, and as far as is known has no relatives in Australia. The funeral will take place at 11 a.m. this morning according to the rites of the Catholic Church, and will move from the hospital. http://trove.nla.gov.au ___________________________________________________________________ (extracted from "Courier-Mail" [QLD, Australia], 25 JAN 1935, PAGE 21): MR.
