She was 88. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 24, 2014 in the chapel of Pittman Funeral Home in Geneva, Ala. with Pastor Rick Atkerson officiating. Burial will follow at Shady Grove Assembly of God Church Cemetery with Pittman Funeral Home of Geneva directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday, April 23, 2014 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Mrs. Coogan was born on March 20, 1926 to the late Willie Bird and Delia Phillips. After serving as a member of the United States Army, she retired from her job with the State of Alabama. Lavelle and her three sisters were known as the "Gambling Grannys." She was always the life of the party, and kept us smiling. Her beautiful smile will be greatly missed. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Orville Roy Coogan; six brothers, Robert Phillips, Blonnie Phillips, Ewell Tom Phillips, Bobby Phillips, Billy Phillips, and Bennie Phillips; two sisters, Lois Dye Peters and Gwendolyn Scott; and grandson, Joshua Adam Smith.
