Died May 6, 1926, in Hartford, Conn. Father, James Coogan, a paper maker and merchant; born in Ireland; came to this country with his parents, Daniel and Mary J. (McGinn) Coogan, who settled in Lee, Mass.; held many town offices at Windsor Locks., serving as member of Board of Selectmen for a number of years; member of Connecticut General Assembly in 1865. Mother, Eliza (Byrne) Coogan, born in Dublin, Ireland. Nephew, James T. Coogan, ‘93 L. Windsor Locks public schools; B.A. St. John's college (Fordham University) 1876; began study of law in office of his brother, Timothy C. Coogan, in Thompsonville, Conn., in 1876; entered Yale School of Law in 1877; during his course there was in office of William C. Case, ‘57, in New Haven for two years; admitted to Hartford County Bar 1879 and practiced law continuously in Hartford until his retirement in January, 1925, practicing in all State and Federal courts of the district; associated with Judge William F. Calhoun and Mahlon R. West in early years of practice; prosecuting attorney of city of Hartford in 1885 and 1886, corporation counsel 1914-16, and a grand juror for some years, member Board of Street Commissioners 1900-06, for a few years made his home in Windsor Locks and represented that town in Connecticut General Assembly in 1882 (served on Committee of Cities and Boroughs), delegate to many Democratic city, county, and state conventions and in 1900 was a candidate on the Democratic ticket for presidential elector, M. A. St. John's 1878, LL.D. 1912; one of the incorporators of St. Francis' Hospital, Hartford, and a director for many years; member Hartford County Bar Association School of Law 297 and St. Joseph's Cathedral, Hartford; active in laymen's retreat movement in Hartford and vicinity since its inception, founding the Laymen's League in Hartford in 1914, the headquarters of which at Mount Mauresa, Staten Island, are conducted by the Fathers of the Society of Jesus. Married December 28, 1898, in Albany, N. Y, Susan Owen, daughter of Murtha Thomas and Mary J. (Owen) Nolan. Children: John William, Jr., and Murtha Thomas, who attended Fordham from 1919 to 1922 and graduated from Trinity in 1923. Death due to heart disease; had been ill for about two years. Buried in Mount St Benedict Cemetery, Hartford.
