[Blog], 16 DEC 1916): PTE JAMES COOGAN He was the youngest son of Mr. & Mrs. John Coogan. He was educated at St. Bede's School and attended church there as well. From leaving school until he enlisted he worked in the manure department of Pilkington Works. Leaving England in June 1915, he took part in the landings at Sulva Bay in Gallipoli in February 1916. He was hospitalized in Manchester with frostbitten feet and returned to his battalion in France in May the same year. In December 1916, it was the worst months spent in the trenches on the Somme due to atrocious weather conditions. James was helping to construct a new trench when he was hit by a German shell.
