Coogan, 87, of Pompano Beach and the Northampton area, died Jan. 10 at the Loomis House in Holyoke. Born March 14, 1912, in Haydenville, he was the son of the late Thomas J. and Mary (Welch) Coogan. He attended the Haydenville Grammar School, and graduated from the former Williamsburg High School. He also graduated from the former Northampton Commercial College, and Benjamin Franklin University of Accounting and Business Law in Washington, D.C. He had lived in Baltimore, Md., for 17 years before moving to Pompano Beach in 1967. He returned to the Northampton area about three years ago. Mr. Coogan saw service in the American, Asiatic Pacific and European theatres during World War II and he retired from the U.S. Army after 29 1/2 years with the rank of lieutenant colonel. He also had retired from the U.S. Postal Inspector Service. He was a member of the Reserve Officers Association, the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, and the American Association of Retired Persons. He was a member of St. Gabriel Catholic Church in Pompano Beach. He leaves a brother, Thomas J. Coogan, of Florence; and two nephews and three nieces. A brother, Lawrence Coogan, and a sister, Mary Caulfield, died earlier. The funeral will be held Thursday morning from the Childs Funeral Home, with a Mass in St. Mary's Church, both in Haydenville. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Leeds. Calling hours are Wednesday afternoon and evening at the funeral home. Memorial gifts may be made to St. Mary of the Assumption Church, P.O. Coogan, 87, of this city, a retired Army officer, died Monday at Loomis House in Holyoke. He was also a retired postal inspector. A veteran of World War II, he served in the Army in the American, Asiatic Pacific and European theaters. He retired as a lieutenant colonel after 29 years of service. Born in the Haydenville section of Williamsburg, he lived in Baltimore from 1950 to 1967 and in Pompano Beach, Fla., before moving back to this area.
