AND OLYMPICS AIDE ORANGE, Conn., May 12 (AP) - James E. Coogan, manager of the 1956 United States Olympic basketball team that won a gold medal at Melbourne, died yesterday in his home. He was 78 years old. At his death, Mr. Coogan was secretary of the United States Basketball Committee and an international executive of the Amateur Athletic Union. He was a representative at four Olympiads. Mr. Coogan was an assistant manager of the basketball team at the Helsinki games in 1952 and manager in 1956 at Melbourne. He was an official on the United States Olympic Committee at Rome four years later and at Tokyo in 1964. Mr. Coogan was Director of Parks and Recreation in New Haven from 1953 to 1965. Early this year he received a special gold medal from the Walter Camp Football Foundation for his services to football for nearly 60 years. ___________________________________________________________________
