John A. “Jack” “Grandpa Jake” Coogan Jr., 85, of Franklin went to be with Jesus and Rosie at 5:45 PM on Wednesday, September 25, 2013. Born February 14, 1928 in Oil City, PA, John was the son of the late John and Victoria (Gregory) Coogan. On October 6, 1951 he married Rosemary Irwin, who preceded him in death on November 23, 2003. John proudly served his country in the Navy during World War II. John was the owner of Coogan & Sons Plumbing, which he established in 1955, until his retirement in 1991 at which time his son took over and still operates to this day. He was a member of the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Franklin. John was a former member of the Rainbow Sportman’s Club. He enjoyed hunting, camping at the “trailer” and the “farm” in Cook’s Forest, and spending time with his grandchildren. Upon his retirement he and Rose traveled extensively throughout Pennsylvania and especially enjoyed going to Wellsboro, the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon to enjoy the fall leaves. He was well known for his serious and sometimes witty sayings which the family lovingly referred to as “Jakeisms”. John is survived by his son, John A. Coogan III and his wife, Linda of Franklin; his grandchildren, John A. Coogan IV of Charlottesville, VA, Benjamin Ross Coogan of Franklin, Joseph M. Morgan of Franklin, and Lisa M. McFall and her husband, J.J. of Oil City; and his eight great-grandchildren; and his sisters, Mary C. Roess of Cochranton, and Judith Deyoe of Palm Bay, Florida. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; his brother, Richard G. Coogan; and his sisters, Patricia Kocan and Elizabeth Uhrmacher. Friends will be received at the Gardinier Funeral Home, Inc., 1315 Chestnut Street, Franklin, on Friday, September 27th, 2013, from 3:00PM – 7:00PM. Funeral services will be held following visitation at 7:00 PM Friday at the funeral home, with Monsignor Bob Smith officiating. Military honors will be accorded by the V.E.T.S. Honor Guard. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery .
