http://www.cooganresearchgroup.com/crg/index.htm 06 June 2011 Obituary of Francis Carr Coogan ________________________________________________________________ (extracted from "Jackson Clarion-Ledger" [MS], 08 MAY 2011): FRANCIS COOGAN - Jackson Francis "Frank Carr Coogan retired Engineer, Educator & Aircrew (US Navy) passed away at the age of 82 on May 6,2011 at Regency Hospital/St. Dominic in Jackson, Ms. The Memorial Service will be held at McLaurin Heights United Methodist Church on 325 Mary Ann Drive in Pearl, Ms on May 9, 2011 at 2:00 pm. Visitation at the Church from 1:00-2:00pm. Frank was born at Stonington, Ct. on November 7, 1928. Graduated form Stonington High School in 1946 and join US Navy in July 5, 1946. Frank was a Veteran of WWII and Korean War. He served on board USS Siapan CVL 48 during WWII and was a radar instructor at Millington,TN. Frank was a member of American Legion Post #1. He held all kinds of post offices and was Central Vice Commander and Boys State Chairman for 5 years. Frank was a certified AME Product Engineer, a Senior SME U IEEE and a member of NSIA. Frank taught Sunday School for 20 years at Briarwood Methodist Church before transfer to McLaurin Methodist Church in Pearl, Ms. Frank was employed at Electric Boat General Dynamics for 11 years after discharge form USN, while at Electric Boat he attend Mitchell College in New London, CT. and earned the ASENG with highest grades in his class winning the Faculty Award in Engineering. He worked on SSN 571 the first nuclear submarine. He was a pioneer in Electronic Intelligence. He also worked on and sailed on sea trails as leading Electronics Tech. for Electric Boats. Frank was employed by & retired form Siemens in Richland, Ms for 28 years. He taught at Columbus Tech Inst in Columbus, Ohio, USN Electronic Basic in Millington, TN. Also taught Airborne Radar operation. He taught electronic physics and math at Hinds Community College for 21 in the evening division. He taught at all branches except Vicksburg and Utica, MS. He also taught at Packard Electric the old glass plant and MTI in Brandon, MS, Survivors include: Wife of 25 years Shirley A. Coogan of Pearl, MS, two daughters Clara Ruth Powell of Pearl, MS & Kathy Olson and her husband Randy of Plano, TX, step daughter Lisa Hinson and her husband Bill of Pearl, MS., step son Todd Steinkamp and his wife Robin of Houston, TX, two grandsons David Powell of Pearl, MS and Matthew Olson of Plano, TX, one grand daughter Sarah Olson of Plano, TX, and one step grand daughter Lauren Steinkamp of Pelahatchie, MS and one sister Ellen Marshall of Stonington, CT. Frank was predeceased by his parents Clarence & Clara (Morgan) Coogan Sr.of Stonington CT, two sisters Prisicalla Howe of Stonington, Ct and Clarissa Lathrop of Donnelen, FL and three brothers Edward Coogan Sr., Jesse Coogan, Clarence Coogan all from Stonington, CT and son-in-law Raymond Powell of Pearl, MS.
