http://www.cooganresearchgroup.com/crg/index.htm 04 January 2014 Obituary of Arthur Paul Coogan _______________________________________________________________________ (extracted from "Wilmington News Journal" [DE], 10 OCT 2013): ARTHUR PAUL COOGAN V.M.D. [photo] Arthur Paul Coogan, age 89, a longtime Wilmington area veterinarian, passed away peacefully, at home, surrounded by his family on Tuesday, October 8, 2013. Dr. Coogan was born in Fairview, New Jersey to Catherine Ward Coogan and Arthur Coogan and was a graduate of Collingswood High School, NJ. A decorated combat veteran of World War II, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps at the age of 19, and was assigned to the 827th Bomb Squadron which saw action in the European Theatre of War. Ultimately, he earned 7 battle stars before his honorable discharge in September, 1945. After his service to our country, Dr. Coogan attended the University of Pennsylvania, graduating from the School of Veterinary Medicine in 1952. Upon completing his veterinary degree, he established Suburban Animal Hospital on Kirkwood Highway. For 60 years, he was a dedicated professional serving the communities of Wilmington where he was beloved and respected. In addition to his practice, Dr. Coogan was also involved in the Delaware community. He was a charter member and Past President of the Rotary Club of Wilmington West and also a member and Past President of the Delaware Veterinary Medical Association. His other interests included spending time with his family, traveling throughout Europe and the United States, golfing at Rock Manor, playing basketball at the Wilmington YMCA, gardening, reading and cooking. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, local artist Joyce Sharp Coogan; their children: Cynthia of Crofton, MD; Kevin (Amy), also a Wilmington veterinarian; Kathleen Collison (Russell) of Warwick, MD; and Joyce Hartmann (Michael) of Wilmington; 9 grandchildren: Paul, Scott, Catherine, Anna, Joseph, Lillian, Erich, Patrick (Kim) and Elise; his sister-in-law, Jean Romano of West Chester, PA; and 6 nieces and nephews. A visitation will be held from 6-8pm on Thursday, October 10, 2013 at the MCCRERY & HARRA FUNERAL, 3710 Kirkwood Highway (Route 2 East, @ Duncan Rd.)Wilm., DE 19808. A funeral service will be held on Friday, October 11th at 11:00 a.m. at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, 2800 Duncan Rd., Millcreek Hundred, Wilmington, DE 19808 followed by a private interment at Silverbrook Cemetery.
