Coogan '45, East Greenwich, R.I.; Nov. 30. He was founder and president of Coogan Insurance Agency, West Warwick, R.I., until retiring in 1962 to teach English at Cranston East High School, where he remained until his retirement in 1987. A past president of the Kent County Insurance Agents Association and the West Warwick Lions Club, he was a member of the National Council of Teachers of English. She was chief health planner for the Washington, D.c., Department of Human Services, coordinating the city's hospitals, mental-health facilities, and emergency agencies. Mayor Marion Barry awarded her a certificate of special merit when she retired in 1979. She was previously personnel officer for the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare. She served as a member of the Fairfax County (Va.) Planning Commission when the zonings of Dulles International Airport and the planned community of Reston were approved. She was elected president of the Northern Viriginia League' of women voters in 1949. During World War II she was a civilian personnel specialist for the U.S. Navy at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. At Brown, she served as a violinist in the orchestra and captain of the archery team. Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma Xi. She is survived by her husband, Terry; a son, Robert, 5709 Little Falls Rd., Arlington, Va. 22209; and a sister, Edna Coogan Snow '43. _____________________________________________________________________ (extracted from "Brown Alumni Magazine", JUL/AUG 2005): David G. Coogan '45, of Boonton, N.J.; Jan. 15, after a short illness. A municipal bond specialist, he retired from Seelaus and Co. in 1997. He was previously cofounder of Coogan, Gilbert and Co., which he operated for ten years. A captain in the U.S. Marines, he served in World War II and the Korean War. He was also a former professional tennis player. He skied until he reached age 80 and was a golfer, scoring three holes-in-one. He was a founding member of St. Catherine of Siena Church and served on the board of St. Claire's Hospital Foundation. He was a volunteer driver for the American Cancer Society. He is survived by his wife, Mary Keating Coogan '47, a son, three daughters, ten grandchildren, a great-granddaughter, a brother and a sister. _____________________________________________________________________ (extracted from "Brown Alumni Magazine", NOV/DEC 2009): Edna Coogan Snow '43, of Providence; July 16. She worked as a Rhode Island state social worker for two years. She worked for the U.S. Social Security Administration for 13 years, then for the East Providence school department as an elementary-school teacher and a reading specialist for 25 years until she retired in 1989. After receiving her master's degree from Rhode Island College (RIC) and after many years of service in education, RIC named a study room in a residence hall in her honor and established the Edna Snow Endowed Scholarship Fund. She was a president of the East Providence Teachers Union and a president of the East Bay Retired Teachers Assoc. She was on the State Retirement Board for ten years, and was a member of the East Providence School Committee and the State Assoc. of School Committees. She enjoyed exercising and playing bridge at the East Providence Senior Center as well as spending time with her family.
