J. The people of South Amboy were much excited, yesterday, over the probable murder of one of a party of Germans who were carousing in MAXAMILLIAN'S saloon during the night. It would seem that a man named TIM COOGAN entered the saloon where the Germans were staying, and, after getting [some] drinks, asked for the change of a large bill, which he did not get. He became abusive, and was ejected, but after a short space returned with some friends, armed with a shillalah and a revolver, and threatened to clear the bar-room. This caused a fight, in which, it is alleged, COOGAN discharged two shots, one of which broke the skull of one of the Germans and the second inflicting a slight scalp wound on one of the same party. It is said that the former cannot recover. He remained insensible yesterday. COOGAN received a severe [drubbing] from MAXAMILLIAN, but was not arrested at [all] accounts. It is supposed that he is still concealed in the neighborhood. ________________________________________________________________ appearing in "Trenton State Gazette" [NJ], 17 JAN 1871: ...
