Miss Coogan, who was employed in a Milwaukee department store, was living with her sister at 1522 East Royal Place, Milwaukee. She was last seen on Monday morning, February 18, when she left her apartment. She had been highly nervous several weeks before her disappearance, which led members of her family to believe she might be suffering from amnesia, or a similar ailment. She took no extra clothes with her and very little money. When she disappeared, Miss Coogan was wearing a brown and tan mixed coat with beaver fur cuffs, a black dress, brown felt hat and black suede shoes. She is five feet, three inches tall, weighs 122 points, is slim, with brown hair and gray-green eyes. ______________________________________________________________________ appearing in "Milwaukee Journal" [WI], 19 MAY 1935, PAGE 1: FIND MISSING WOMAN DEAD Miss Gertrude Coogan's Body Recovered From Lake Michigan The body of Miss Gertrude Coogan, 27, of 1522 East Royal place who disappeared on Feb. 18, was recovered from Lake Michigan Saturday. Coroner's assistants said the body had been in the water nearly three months. Shortly before 5 p.m., Robert Stemmier, 15, of 2600 S. Shore drive, and Louis Ullstrup, 15, of 2566 S. Delaware av., who were in a row- boat in the lake off Illinois Steel property, saw the body floating in the water near them. They called to some acquaintances on shore who notified Patrolman Joseph Schucks. Schucks rowed out to the boys' boat. The three brought the body to shore before coast guardsmen arrived. At the morgue coroner's assistants discovered that the clothing worn by the woman corresponded with that worn by Miss Coogan when she disappeared. Later the body was identified by James [Mannic], 1748 N. Thirty-fifth st., Miss Coogan's fiance. He said that he last saw her alive on the Saturday preceding her disappearance. Miss Coogan was employed in a downtown store. She lived with a sister, Winnifred, an assistant librarian at the public library. Coogan, above, 27, found floating in Lake Michigan Saturday, was to be taken to Watertown today for funeral services. Miss Coogan, the daughter of William Coogan, Watertown, disappeared three months ago. She had been employed in the advertising department of a large Milwaukee store and relatives and friends could advance no reason for her disappearance.
