The family maintained ties to that townland from the mid Nineteenth Century until (at least) 1911. An important clue to the relationships is that Benjamin and Anne were said to have 13 children (9 still living) in 1911. It is possible that the ancestor of this family was Joshua Coogan, a wealthy farmer from Whiteleas (near Bellewstown). He was killed on 11 JUL 1859 in an unfortunate riding accident while riding between his home and Drogheda. The framework of this whole family is tentative and is subject to change. One member of the group, Benjamin James Coogan (son of Benjamin Coogan), emigrated to Australia in the late Nineteenth Century. He settled in Parramatta, New South Wales. The family was later connected to Wentworthville. Another member of the family, Joshua Coogan (son of John Coogan), emigrated to the United States in the late Nineteenth Century. He first settled in New York. He was sent to the Philippines during the Spanish American War and later served for many years at the Presidio in San Francisco, California. An important clue to the family connections in the US is that Joshua's New York address in the 1900 census was given as 111 W. 13th Street.
