He was born in Ireland and moved to Quebec, Canada, in the mid Nineteenth Century. He settled in Sherbrooke County. Later, he moved to Bowmanville (Durham County), Ontario. John's oldest son, John Creig Coogan, was an oilman. He moved to the United States and lived in Ohio and West Virginia. His son, Frederick Leon Coogan, continued in the oil business, moving his family to Beckham County, Oklahoma in 1923. He lived there until his death. While in OK, Fred became a prominent member of the State Republican Committee - he nominated General Douglas MacArthur for President at the Republican National Convention (Chicago) in 1952. One of Fred's sons, John Creig Coogan, migrated to Harris County (Houston), Texas to pursue a career in the oil business. Several descendants of this family still live in Sayre, OK, while many more live near Houston. Another of John's sons, George B. Coogan, moved to Cleveland (Cuyahoga County), Ohio. Later in life, he moved to Detroit (Wayne) County, Michigan. His children lived in Minnesota, Brooklyn (New York) and Los Angeles (California). Still another of John's son, William Coogan, remained in Canada longer than his siblings. He eventually moved to Detroit, Michigan. Descendants of this family later moved to Chicago, Illinois.
