Research:

This is the Coogan family from Shenandoah, Schuylkill County, 
Pennsylvania.  The two known ancestors of this family are 
Richard Coogan and John Coogan, both born in Ireland.  It is 
likely that this family originated in County Kilkenny, Ireland.  
When members of this family emigrated to the United States in 
the mid Nineteenth Century, most lived in the town of Cass.

Richard Coogan's descendants lived in Shenandoah but later moved
to Philadelphia.  One of Richard's grandsons was Henry Lawrence 
'Harry' Coogan.  He joined the Army, serving in Europe during 
the First World War.  He returned to the United States, where he 
settled in Queens, New York.  Harry's son, Henry C., joined the 
Army and was a veteran of World War II and Korea.

John Coogan's son, James Coogan, lived in Shenandoah at the
"family homestead" on West Coal Street.  One of his sons was 
James H. Coogan, a graduate of Pennsylvania State University, 
newspaper writer and director of sports publicity at PSU until 
his sudden death (he was giving a speech at the Penn State Club 
of Southern New Jersey). In his memory, the most valuable player 
of the annual Penn State - Pitt football game is awarded the 
"James H. Coogan Award."

This family has also appeared as COOGIN and COGAN.

This family has a confirmed connection with another Coogan 
family from Schuylkill County - that of Ellen Bridget Coogan 
(Cass).  Around 1884, Martin Murphy (son of Michael Murphy and 
Ellen Bridget Coogan) married Bridget Coogan (daughter of Richard 
Coogan and Mary [     ]).
