     #299 - Mary Coogan Stimson (Ocala, FL)

Research:

This is the family of Peter Coogan.  He was born in Morristown,
County Kildare, Ireland.  He moved (with his parents) to the 
United States the mid Nineteenth Century.  After a few years
living in Watertown (Jefferson County), New York, and abroad (on 
a whaling ship!), Peter eventually settled in Syracuse, (Onondaga 
County), New York.  

Some of Peter's descendants moved to Buffalo but most still live 
in the Syracuse area today.

This family may have originally been surnamed COGAN.  The name
was probably "changed" to COOGAN by the newspapers after the 
family moved to Syracuse, where the famous Jackie Coogan's family
also resided.  At least one member of this group continued to
use COGAN in the Twentieth Century.
