Research:

This is the family of Andrew Coogan.  We do not know where
he was born (probably Ireland), but he was living in Victoria, 
Australia, before 1860.

Most of Andrew's children moved from mainland Australia to the
island of Tasmania in the late Nineteenth Century. The impetus 
for this migration was the establishment of a family business in 
Launceston by one of the older sons (William J. Coogan).  The
enterprise (supplying "top quality hand made furniture produced 
from the finest Tasmanian timbers) was so successful - Coogan's 
sent shiploads of its product to Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide - 
and had retail stores in Launceston, Hobart, Burnie and 
Ulverstone - that the residents of Launceston elected William to
be their mayor.  

The family maintained roots in the area for many years - 
primarily in the Bass and Denison Districts.
