Research:

This is one of the Coogan families of Livingston County, New 
York.  The family arrived in the United States in the early 
Nineteenth Century.  The earliest known members of this were
living in Sparta township in 1840 (due to the census format that 
year, we are not able to determine the exact names of members of
the family at that time and must conjecture relationships).  

A descendant of this family, John Coogan, later moved to Oakland 
County, Michigan.

This family is probably related to the COOGAN other families that 
lived in Cayuga County between the 1850s and 1870s.  Stories 
about "a large group of Coogans" in Livonia and Lima helped form 
the family structure below.  It is definitely subject to change!
