He was born in Ireland and emigrated to the United States in the mid Nineteenth Century. He settled in Hampshire County, Massachusetts. Several members of this family died in 1874 in the "Mill River Disaster," in which nearly 200 people were killed when a dam broke above the towns of Williamsburg, Haydenville and Leeds. A note in a report of the disaster mentioned that "James Coogan's farm was destroyed." This family has also been found as CUGAN and COGAN.
