http://www.cooganresearchgroup.com/crg/index.htm 08 June 2014 Researcher (Location): #257 - Alan David Coogan (Portland, OR) Research: This is the family of Richard Coogan. We are fairly certain that he came from County Dublin, Ireland. His father's name could have been Michael. Richard emigrated to the United States in the mid Nineteenth Century and settled in New York City. Richard's son, Michael Coogan, learned the trade of plumber in New York and later moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where he established a Steam Heating Company. One of Richard's grand-sons, James Aloysius Coogan, later moved his family to the Kansas City, Missouri, area. James' wife had a strong connection with New Orleans (Orleans Parish), Louisiana, where she moved the family after his death. One of Michael's grand-sons, James Alan Coogan, became a reporter with United Press International. He was present in the hallway of the Louisiana State House in 1935 when Huey Long was assassinated and was the first reporter to call in the incident. Later, he married Helen Townsley (from a prominent newspaper family in Kansas). Subsequently, he worked as general manager for his in-laws' newspaper, the "Great Bend Daily Tribune." In the mid Twentieth Century, he was appointed head of the South American Bureau of UPI. The family lived in Bogota, Columbia, during that time. By the late 1950s, he was working in the public relations department of the Cregie Petroleum Corporation in Caracas, Venezuela. An important note is that the family maintained connections with "cousins" in New York City. After the 1927 suicide of Michael's grand-son, Jesse Casterlin Coogan, the "New York Times" reported that the wife of one of his New York relatives, "Fannie" Coogan, provided details for news reports. There is a good chance that this family is related to the New Orleans Coogan family. _________________________________________________________________ Alan is a descendant of Michael Coogan through his son, James Aloysius Coogan. ************************** 01.
