Bob gained construction knowledge working with his father where they built homes in Crellin, MD. He work in the Crellin coal mines at a later date. He learned the blacksmith trade while employed on the construction of Deep Creek Lake, then moved to Havre de Grace, MD were he worked on the Conowingo Dam. He moved to New York, with his brothers Arthur and Charley, were he was employed for the construction of the Catskill aqueduct water system to New York City from 1923 to 1930.

After his second marriage, he moved to Pleasant Valley, MD where he owned a small farm. He inherited the Merrill farm from his aunt Flora Merrill. The family was still living on the farm at the time of his death.
