Notes for: Mary Gervase Shields
Mary Gervase Shields, aka Mary Agnes Gervase Shields, SC, is the daughter by mother's first husband Matthew Shields. She is sister to Agnes Shields Bender also of this directory. Sr. Gervase was half sister to the other children of James F. Coogan. One of thse is Mary Bridget Coogan, aka as Sr. Margaret Frances, SC, of the Greensburg Srs. of Charity.
The marriage of her father so soon after mothers death upset Sr. MF to the point of bad feelings toward Sr. Gervase to whom she would never speak. This split in the family was rarely spoken of publicly but was felt when certain names were mentioned.
